Stroke Survivors and Walks

Taking regular brisk walks outdoors can help people recovering from a stroke to improve their physical fitness, enjoy a better quality of life, and increase their mobility. The walking group in this study reported a 16.7% improvement in health-related quality of life, and walked 17.6% further in a six- minute physical endurance test. They also had a 1.5% lower resting heart rate at the end of the study than they did at the beginning, while the non-walking groups resting heart rate went up 6.7%. The American Heart Association recommends stroke survivors do aerobic exercise for 20-60 minutes, 3-7 days a week, depending on fitness level.

Cognitive Function and Exercise

Regular exercise as a child can result in improved cognitive function at age 50. Exercise represents a key component of lifestyle interventions to prevent cognitive decline, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and cancer. Even low levels of exercise can have a positive effect on cognitive function.

Cash and Weight Loss?

Researchers found money is an effective incentive when motivating people to lose weight. 62% of participants received financial incentives (20% if they met their monthly goal vs. paying $20 if they fell short of their goal) met their goal, compared with 26% of the non-incentive group. In the incentive group group, the participants' mean weight loss was 9.1 lbs (~4.1 kg), and for the non-incentive group it was 2.3 lbs (~1 kg).

Negativity Online

Story of our lives right? Today almost everything we do is based around the internet and social medias. It it said that simply reading angry rants online can cause mood shifts within five minutes of doing so, even if you find them entertaining, interesting, or funny. So when your searching the internet maybe try to find more positive and uplifting things to read because the internet can either help or hinder your mood at times.

Disk Biochemistry

Proper joint motion helps remove wastes and fluids from the disks of your spine and improves the flow of proper nutrients into the disk. It is important to understand that the disk does not have a direct blood supply, and disks only stay healthy with motion. With lack of motion there is decreased oxygen, glucose, sulfates, and proteoglycan content, all of which are essential for disk health.

Standard Medical Care and Chiropractic

Compared to those who received standard medical care (SMC) alone, military personnel (ages 18-35) with back pain who received chiropractic care in addition to SMC showed significantly  more improvement in both decreased pain and increased physical function.  Note: This particular study did not include a group of patients who only received chiropractic manipulative therapy.

Eating Citrus Reduces Stroke

Women who consumed the most citrus were less likely to have an ischemic (clot-related) stroke than women who consumed the least. Researchers attributed the benefit to compounds in citrus called flavanones, which may reduce inflammation and improve blood vessels function. Other substances in citrus, including potassium, may also play a role.

Positive Mental Attitude

8 Tips to Help Create A Positive Mental Attitude
By: Declan OFlaherty
Remember that you are powerful

  • What we are is far greater, far superior, far more important, and far more mysterious than our conceptual mind tries to define. This is why we are far more powerful then we think we are.
Choose to embrace life
  •  Take the first step before more time gradually passes by while you stand still stagnating. Your choice. Your life. Your responsibility. Your power.
Realize that you get to control your reactions
  • We have the power because our inner world (cause) affects the influence we allow the outer world (effect) to have on us.
Know that no one is better qualified
  • Stop identifying with other people's opinions and become aware of how you see yourself. Nobody knows you better than you do.
Believe that you are more than enough
  • If you focus on what you have, and not on what you lack, you will always have enough, because you will always be enough.
Love yourself
  • Be yourself. Love yourself completely and accept everything that you are. You are beautiful. Believe it, and most importantly, remind yourself often.
Stay cool
  • We are responsible for our own action, regardless of how rude other people may act. Remember: you are the who loses in the end, if you lose the lesson.
Journey well
  • We know life is about the journey and not the arrival. We don't need to arrive if we accept that we are already here.
"A healthy attitude is contagious but don't wait to catch it from others. Be a carrier."

Early Divorce Influences Parent-Child Relationship

Recent research suggests divorce has a greater influence on child-parent relationships if it happens in the first few years of a child's life. Individuals whose parents got divorced while they were between birth and three to five years old were more insecure about their current relationships with their parents compared to those whose parents divorced after childhood. Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, June 2013

An Hour of Exercise Is Not Enough for Boys!

A recent study is the first to look at the link between children's physical activity and cardiovascular risk. Researchers determines risk by looking at blood pressure, cholesterol, and skin fold testing results from 300o children under the age of 10. The study revealed that boys  less than 6 years of age need more than 70 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous exercise per day and older boys need at least 80 minutes. Girls of all ages need approximately 60 minutes of exercise.  BMC Medicine, July 2013
